Description
This piece is handmade using the decoupage technique and carefully finished by hand. It is not a hand-painted Byzantine icon. The religious image is applied to the wooden surface using decoupage, creating a distinctive devotional and decorative piece.
Saint Irene Chrysovalantou was born in 825 AD in Cappadocia, Asia Minor, during the period of Iconoclasm. Her father, Philaretos, was the military commander of the region.
In 843 AD, Empress Theodora brought the period of Iconoclasm to an end. She asked Philaretos to bring Irene to Constantinople, intending for her to marry her son Michael. Irene, however, wished to devote her life to prayer and asceticism. At only 15 years of age, she entered the renowned Monastery of Chrysovalantou and became a nun.
After the Abbess of the monastery passed away, Irene succeeded her and carried out significant spiritual work. She was blessed with the gift of foresight, and many Christians visited the monastery to listen to her spiritual teachings and seek her guidance.
Saint Irene was distinguished for her ascetic life and the many miracles attributed to her. She peacefully reposed at the age of 104. The Orthodox Christian Church celebrates her feast day each year on 28 July.
A meaningful religious piece for a home prayer corner or icon display, as well as a thoughtful Orthodox Christian gift for a loved one.
