Description
This beautiful handmade icon depicts Saint Irene the Megalomartyr (the Great Martyr), a powerful symbol of faith, resilience, and divine protection from the 4th century AD.
The Miraculous Story of Saint Irene:
An Angelic Calling: Originally named Penelope, she was the brilliant daughter of wealthy parents in Magedon, Persia, educated by the wise teacher Apellianos. Following a powerful dream where an Angel of the Lord called her to Christ, she was secretly baptized by a priest and took the name Irene.
Triumph over Persecution: Infuriated by her conversion, her pagan father, Licinius, ordered wild horses to trample her. Instead, the horses left Irene untouched, and one turned to kill Licinius. Through Irene’s compassionate prayers, her father was miraculously resurrected, leading both him and Apellianos to embrace Christianity.
Unshakable Faith: Despite enduring horrific tortures under Licinius’s successor, Sedecias, and surviving a decapitation order by the Persian King Saborios, she was repeatedly freed by God. Her miraculous survival spread her fame across Persia, where she continued her missionary work until she peacefully fell asleep in the Lord.
Feast Day: The Orthodox Christian Church celebrates her memory on May 5th. This icon makes a deeply meaningful name-day gift for anyone named Irene or Penelope, as well as a beautiful addition to any home prayer corner or icon collection.
