Handmade Wooden Icon: Christ and the True Vine, Apostles – Greek Orthodox Art

Description

This symbolism with the Vine comes from Christ’s words in the Gospel of John, chapter 15, where Christ explains His relationship with His disciples as one of life and connected unity. The Vine, as mentioned, is the true Vine, and Christ emphasizes the importance of the branches (His disciples) remaining united with it in order to bear fruit.

The phrase “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser” means that Christ is the source of life, and God the Father is the one who cares for, cultivates, and cleanses the branches. Any branch that does not bear fruit is cut off, while those that bear fruit are pruned to bear even more fruit. This image symbolizes the need for spiritual fruitfulness through faith and unity with Christ.

The placement of the Twelve Apostles on the branches of the Vine, with the Chief Apostles Peter and Paul at the top, underscores the position of the Church and its leaders as being connected to Christ and their key role in spreading the Gospel.

The depiction of Christ with an open Gospel at the center with this phrase highlights Christ’s command to the faithful to remain united with Him, so that they may live and bear spiritual fruit in accordance with God’s will.
